Rebuilding a Failing Retaining Wall and Walkway

In 8 Hours, for just $60, and with a whole lot of determination

We’ve all faced that one yard project that loomed a little too long. The one we kept walking past thinking, “I’ll get to it someday.”

For Melanie Heindl, that “someday” arrived when her family’s retaining wall and walkway began to crumble.

Watch her story on YouTube:

Instead of calling a contractor and shelling out close to a thousand dollars, she rolled up her sleeves, grabbed the tamper and shovel, and rebuilt the whole thing herself for just $60.

The story reminds us what the Handy Women spirit is all about: seeing a problem, grabbing the tools we already have, and turning that “I can’t” into a proud “I did.”

Melanie’s Yearly Yard Projects

Like so many of us, Melanie wanted her outdoor space to be safe, sturdy, and inviting — a place her kids could play without tripping hazards and her family could enjoy without worrying about collapsing pavers.

Every year, she takes time off work to tackle one big yard project. This time, the wall’s collapse decided the priority for her.

Finding the hours and energy to do it was hard, but sometimes, the challenge is exactly what makes the victory feel earned.

Budget and Time: The Twin Constraints

If there’s one thing we Handy Women understand, it’s making magic happen under constraints.

Melanie had both a tight budget and only a day to spare. Between taking care of her two children, work, and limited daylight, she had to plan every hour and save every dollar.

A contractor would have easily charged them a grand at least. But with leftover pavers and blocks, a few bags of leveling sand, polymeric sand, a rented tamper, and a level, she was able to do the work herself.

Creative Problem-Solving in Action

No big project goes perfectly, and Melanie’s was no exception. Early on, she realized the original retaining wall layout was doomed to fail again — it just wasn’t stable enough. So she tore it out, moved dirt, and redesigned the layout from scratch.

She learned to stop being overly fussy with leveling and finding that “good enough” balance between precision and progress. By keeping her cool, re-configuring when needed, and trusting her instincts, Melanie got faster and more confident as the day went on.

In the end, she finished the job in just 8 hours, even though when she started it, she had assumed it would take at least a couple of days.

The “YES!” Moment

There’s nothing like stepping back after hours of sweat and seeing straight lines, stable walls, and neat, even pavers. Melanie was so happy with the finished walkway that her surge of confidence carried over into her next project at her parents’ place.

It’s this ripple effect we love to see: one DIY success leading to another.

The Outcome: Safer, Prettier, and Proudly DIY

By the end of her 8-hour build, the transformation was undeniable. What used to be a wobbly, uneven walkway became a smooth, solid path that’s safer for everyone. No more tripping hazards, no more eyesores!

Melanie’s total spend? $60.
Her savings? Close to $1,000.

And her reward was a gorgeous yard, and that quiet, proud satisfaction that comes only from doing it yourself.

Lessons We Can All Take Away

As a community, we’ve learned that perfection isn’t the goal — persistence is. Melanie’s story reminds us that even when time and money are tight, creativity and courage can build beautiful things.

Here are a few takeaways we loved from her project:

  • Reuse what you have
  • “Good enough” is often perfect, and
  • Progress beats polish

Every Handy Woman has a story like this waiting to happen. And every one of those wins deserves celebration.
